Button heads provide a larger bearing surface and a lower head profile than Socket heads and are used when the material is too thin to countersink. Because of their smaller outer diameter, Socket Head screws may be preferred and are sometimes recessed (counterbored). When clearance is an issue, use a Low Socket Head instead of a Socket Head.
